Securing High-Profile Public Figures: Axios Security Group Supports Former Governor Roy Cooper in Durham
Axios Security Group recently provided protective security support for former North Carolina Governor and U.S. Senate candidate Roy Cooper during an appearance at St. Joseph AME Church in Durham, North Carolina.
For our team, the assignment represented something we emphasize throughout our protective operations: effective security should protect the mission without becoming the mission.
Security Beyond the Visible Presence
When a high-profile public figure attends a public event, security involves much more than positioning personnel near the protectee.
The protective environment can include the principal, event organizers, invited guests, members of the public, employees or volunteers, media, vehicles, surrounding areas, and multiple access points.
That requires security professionals to continuously evaluate what is happening inside and outside the venue.
During the Durham event, Axios personnel worked alongside local law enforcement while supporting access monitoring, situational awareness, movement and crowd management, observation of activity around the venue, and identification of potential security concerns.
The objective was straightforward: protect the people, protect the venue, and allow the event to proceed without unnecessary disruption.
Private Security and Law Enforcement Working Together
One of the most important components of high-profile event security is coordination.
Private security and law enforcement have different responsibilities and authorities, but effective communication between them can significantly strengthen the overall security environment.
Professional protective personnel must understand those boundaries.
The goal is not to compete with law enforcement. It is to work professionally within the security structure surrounding the event, communicate relevant information, maintain situational awareness, and support a common public-safety objective.
At the Cooper appearance, Axios personnel had the opportunity to work alongside local law enforcement professionals throughout the event.
That cooperation is exactly what professional security should look like.
Executive Protection Is About Preparation
The public often sees executive protection only at the moment a protection professional is standing next to a principal.
The real work begins much earlier.
Professional protective operations can involve advance planning, threat and vulnerability considerations, venue evaluation, access points, arrivals and departures, transportation, communications, emergency contingencies, crowd dynamics, and coordination with other security and public-safety personnel.
Every assignment is different.
A corporate executive attending a private meeting presents a different environment from a public figure appearing before a large audience. A house of worship creates different considerations from a corporate headquarters, hotel, convention center, or outdoor event.
That is why executive protection cannot simply be reduced to placing a security officer beside someone.
It requires judgment.
Protection Without Disruption
There is another element of professional protection that is sometimes overlooked: discretion.
Security should be capable of responding immediately when circumstances require it, but a successful protective operation should also allow the protectee and everyone around them to conduct their business as normally as possible.
As Jereme Dozier, CEO and Co-Founder of Axios Security Group, explains:
“Effective protection is built on preparation, coordination, and professionalism. Our job is simple: protect the people and let the mission continue.”
That philosophy guides how Axios approaches protective operations.
Preparation matters.
Communication matters.
Professionalism matters.
And when law enforcement, private security, event leadership, and other stakeholders work together effectively, security becomes stronger without unnecessarily interfering with the purpose of the event.
